Theatre Review “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” – Montgomery, AL

Short Version: Lighthearted farce with a competent cast in a very beautiful theatre.

I just got back from Montgomery, AL where I celebrated my mother’s 89th birthday with some of her extended family. For those of you that have never visited this capitol of Alabama (and first capitol of the Confederacy), it is a lovely city that I have come to consider my second home. My sister, Maggie,  has lived in MGM since she married Erich (“Rick”) Harmon shortly after they graduated college (Auburn) and their daughter, Evie, lives there also.

I saw a different production of the show years ago and this version was better and updated with additional, topical, material by Jay Reiss. The cast were all veterans of Off Broadway and Regional Theatres and had the necessary good comedic chops.

What really impresses me (each time I visit) is the beautiful facility. The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is a member of LORT and sits in the middle of a beautiful public park. The setting and the building are breathtaking and make the theatre-going experience that much more memorable.
